Easter Egg Hunt

Our city holds an annual Easter egg hunt the day before Easter every year. Last year was our first year at this event. Since Ryan was just a peanut, only 2 months old, he did not participate. I looked forward to taking him this year because he is now walking and this was right up his alley. We arrived 30 minutes prior to the hunt. To pass the time Ryan was collecting leaves in his basket. Before we knew it, it was time for the big hunt. All of the crazy parents lined the grass area designated for kids under 2 years of age. Parents were allowed to assist their kids with the egg gathering. When the candy and eggs were thrown onto the grass, the hunt was on. Thankfully we found a small spot where Ryan picked up four eggs and a few pieces of candy while I took some pictures and video. When the eggs and candy in this small section were cleared out, we were done collecting. We then decided it was time to hunt down the Easter bunny and get our free picture with the furry fellow. After waiting in a short line, it was our turn. I put Ryan on the bunny's lap and Sanjay and I stood on either side. Ryan immediately began crying. Not the 'I'm sad whiny cry,' but the 'OH MY GOSH I AM BEING TORTURED cry.' The sheer terror on his face was priceless. I felt bad, but I just wanted one free picture for the memory. I mean everyone has goofy kid pictures with the Easter bunny. Okay, so maybe next year we will have to talk about the bunny and look at him from afar before we actually take the big step...pictures with the bunny!

My Very Own Bird

When I was little I wanted a bird. My cousins had birds and I thought they were the coolest pets, far cooler than dogs and cats. I am proud to say I am now the owner of a parrot. Not the bird covered in feathers, but a human parrot, and I use the term "owner" loosely. Ryan is now saying actual words. He won't say things on his own, I say the word and he repeats it, much like a parrot. Because I am enjoying this so much I make him say all sorts of silly things. Names are the funniest, I will say a name like Savannah and it comes out like "Nanana," or Krista which comes out like "TiTa." Or, he will only say part of the word, thinking he is saying the whole thing, like bird. He says "bi," water, is "wa." The best part is he thinks he is so funny when he says words. He will repeat a word like "ta" for truck and then laugh. I tried to get it on video, but he is more interested in the camera at that point. Yet another milestone for my crazy little guy!

Airplanes

For quite awhile Ryan has been intrigued by airplanes. He can hear the noise of an airplane and point in the sky without ever even seeing the plane. Recently we went up north to visit the Ferraros. We flew, of course, and while we were waiting to board our flight Ryan spent the better part of an hour peering out the window at the planes taking off and landing.

Do I really have "that" kid?

Lately I have been wondering, "Do I have 'that' kid?" By that kid I mean the one who hits other kids and then smiles about it, the kid who throws temper tantrums and won't sit in his carseat, the kid who runs everywhere which means I run everywhere to keep him from running in the street, down the stairs, or just escaping through any open door? The most bothersome part of this is the hitting. I know he doesn't get it yet, but I feel horrible for his victims. During class, Ryan will walk up to children and hit them on the head. I don't think he does it maliciously, and I apologize for his actions and try to explain to Ryan that he has to use "nice hands" when touching friends. I know he can be very sweet and when he goes up to kids there is a 50% chance that he will hit and a 50% chance that he will hug them. I never know what he will do and I don't think he gets it!

Last Friday Ryan threw the biggest tantrum when I tried to put him in his carseat. We were out at the park and it was time to come home. He was fine until I tried to sit him in the seat. That was it! He tried to grab the sides of the seat and stand up, anything to keep me from sitting him in his carseat. All the while he was screaming his head off as people were driving and walking by. I looked like mom of the year at that point, trying to sit him down and pry his hands from the sides of the seat while telling him, "Sit down, we are going home. Let's go see Lucy." Anything to get him to cooperate. Finally he realized he was fighting a losing battle and let me strap him in...10 minutes later! I was exhausted! So was he because he fell asleep as I drove home thinking about what I could've done differently. You can't reason with a one year old.

Lastly, I don't mind that he runs, and runs, and runs, and well, you get the picture. I'm just exhausted chasing him. Who knew kids had this much energy! I will say it is fun to watch him, especially when he thinks I'm not watching him. Lately I have let him play in his room by himself for short periods of time while I do chores upstairs (right outside of his room). When he thinks I am not looking, I peek through the holes of the gate in his bedroom door and watch him walk from one toy to another or pick up a book and try to read it, or just have a conversation with himself while playing. I have so much fun spying on him. He is also so much fun to play with. He understands that when you throw him the ball he can throw it back to you, or that when you chase him and catch him, he will get tickled (which brings a huge grin to his face followed by lots of baby giggles), and he has learned what it means when I tell him hold hands because he will grab my hand when we are walking, and the best part is when I tell him, "Hugs Ryan, give mommy a hug." He will run over to me with his arms out and lay his head on me while I hug him. So maybe right now I feel like he is "that kid," but I know soon enough he will understand my words and stop hitting other kids, because after all he is a sweet boy, but for now I always have to be one step ahead of him, just in case...

Home Sweet Home...For Now

We are finally settling into our new place. I think there are two boxes left to unpack. The transition has gone smoothly for Ryan, although he has been through a lot in the past week. We moved and he has been weaned from breastfeeding. That is a lot for a one year old. One of the best things about our new place is Ryan's bedroom. First, it was already painted little boy blue (YEAH!), second, it is completely childproofed so he can play in there by himself (which never really happens) without me having to redirect his attention from an outlet or lamp or tv, etc., third, in his room, he has his own bathroom complete with a child sized tub. In our old place we had a spa tub, nice for me, not so fun for the little guy. For the record, in the 16 months we were in our last home, I did not take one bath. :( We are all happy in this new home, even Lucy doesn't seem to mind not having a yard. She has found lots of sunshine in our bedroom and sleeps in the sun for many hours during the day. She has the best life! So here we will stay for hopefully the next year and see where life takes us after that!

Father and son

The picture on the left is really like father like son. We took Ryan to the beach to watch planes take off. I thought he would really enjoy the planes, but he seemed to like the sand more. This was a rare moment when he actually noticed the large vessel taking off over the Pacific Ocean. With this new love of the sand, it looks like we'll have more beach days when it warms up a bit.
